The housing market is to stay open across the UK despite the pending return to Tier 4 restrictions on Boxing Day.
An announcement from Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick, on Twitter, reads as follows:
“Housing market update: the sales and rental markets remain open in all tiers. All associated activities can continue as before.”
He continues: “Please follow the COVID-secure guidance. And use your judgment as to whether it’s necessary right now.”
This final sentence from Jenrick echoes Westminster and Scottish government guidance - along with restricting Christmas and travel plans - that people should use their own judgment on whether to continue with planned activities.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has also provided specific guidance. It says: “You can still move home. People outside your household or support bubble should not help with moving house unless absolutely necessary. Estate and letting agents as well as removals firms can continue to work. If you are looking to move, you can go to property viewings. Follow the national guidance on moving home safely, which includes advice on both social distancing and following necessary precautions.”
So far nothing has been said about the small number of residential transactions that might involve crossing the border between England and Scotland. There is a travel ban on border crossing imposed by the Scottish Government for the duration of the festive period.
As soon as I have any more information I will of course share with you all immediately. In the meantime, if you need any advice or guidance, please feel free to contact me.
Stay safe and enjoy the festive season as much as is possible in these times.
